Quality Health Care For All

The Job

Smithton provides an exciting and at times challenging experience for GP registrars.

For the registrar who wants to have a rounded experience and to be exposed to conditions and situations not found in major urban centres, Smithton is an invaluable training opportunity, unmatched in Tasmania.

Teaching

Registrars are well supported by the doctors and nursing staff, both at the surgery and at Smithton District Hospital.

Our registrars always do well in their exams, a fact for which we are happy to take some small credit, even if coincidental. For a complete list of our former registrars see the registrar honour list.

Accommodation

The local council and UTAS have together contributed to a beautiful, new and well situated house which is dedicated for the use of registrars by first preference and is also at times used by our locums when otherwise not occupied.

You will have privacy, room for family and freedom from the hassles of having to find your own accomodation. It is situated very close to the hospital and within walking distance of the surgery.

Smithton

Smithton is not as remote as it is sometimes reputed to be and there are lots of activities for those interested in participating in the community.

Sporting facilities are impressive. The community is welcoming and previous registrars have had no trouble engaging with our patients.

The registrars have been highly respected by the people here and are often talked about years later with fondness. You really have the opportunity to make an impact and you won't be just a number!

Back up

You are treated as one of us but are always backed up by a practice GP at all times. You will be able to be the first to make the assessment and decisions, knowing you can fall back on the advice of more experienced clinicians if required.

Remuneration

The structure of our clinic and hospital operations are such that it is not easy to compare our pay package with other practices but sufficient to say you will be satisfied with the arrangement and come out in front in comparison with your registrar colleagues.
